For the purposes of simplifying language in this Toolkit, the term domestic violence will be used to define violence by one intimate partner against another. Links to specific state laws addressing the crime as it is defined in each state are provided in the Resource Site, along with each state’s mandatory reporting laws. Additionally, when we refer generally to domestic violence in this training, we are including the sexual violence that may occur within domestic violence.

Most medical professionals are already familiar with the overwhelming reality of domestic violence because of the patients they have treated, or general domestic violence training they have completed. This section serves as a reminder of the widespread existence of the problem, as well as a more in-depth look at the dynamics of domestic violence.
